Welcome And The Real Goal
Sebastian RuskThis is PodcastSuck, the podcast that helps business owners start and grow a podcast that actually grows their business. I'm your host, Sebastian Rusk. If you've been thinking about starting a podcast, already have one that's going absolutely nowhere, or you're looking for a better way to build authority, create content, grow your network, and generate more opportunities, well, you're in the right place. So stop overthinking it, stop waiting for the perfect time, and let's get your podcast working for you. Let's dive in.
When Old Lessons Finally Land
Sebastian RuskWhat's happening, everybody? Happy Monday to you. We got a new setup going on here, so I am hoping that we're live on all fronts. The goal was to go live on LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube to record a podcast episode of Podcast Suck. Today, I want to talk about lessons that we've learned in the past, but they didn't click then. But 10 years later, they do. It's funny how sometimes things work out like that. And I was reminded of that when the new article or new uh copy of Entrepreneur Magazine showed up at my door. Big shout out to my boy Gary Vanderchuck for sending me a signed copy of it. This is the second time Gary's been on Entrepreneur Magazine in less than 10 years. Something to be said with that. Why? Because they only feature entrepreneurs that are actually doing things and building things that matter. But more importantly, they write stories about how those individuals can help you. And that's what I want to talk about a little bit today. Have you
Gary V And Daily Execution
Sebastian Ruskever looked back at something from 10 years ago and realized that the lesson was sitting right in front of you the entire time? It's kind of wild. So I picked up this got the latest issue of Entrepreneur Magazine. And Gary's on the cover again. I've had the unique privilege of knowing Gary for the past 15 years. So I'm not shocked that he's on the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine yet again. But what really stood out to me was that the first time I held a copy of Entrepreneur Magazine with Gary on it was back in 2017. I still remember reading every single page and soaking it all in because there's always a good valuable message, especially when it comes from a guy like Gary. But one thing hasn't changed, whether it was 10 years ago or it was today, and that is Gary still shows up massively on a daily basis because he wants to do one thing. Win. And he also wants to change the narrative of the conversations that people have about where they are in life, about their business, about their limitations, etc. And that's exactly what I want to talk to you about today on this episode. We're going to spend the next 10 minutes talking about what it means for you to let the lesson that you're hearing right now land. What does it mean for you to actually start the thing? And that's exactly what most entrepreneurs fail at the most. They talk about what they want to do, but execution very rarely happens. So today, that's exactly what I want to talk to you about. I want to talk to you about why so many entrepreneurs never start a podcast. Of course, I'm going to use podcasting as an example here, because, well, podcasting's my game. So if this is the first time you're tuning in, whether you're listening to the podcast on Apple or Spotify, you watch, you caught the live stream on Facebook or on YouTube or on LinkedIn, allegedly. Maybe it's a replay. Maybe set somebody sent it to you. Either way, thank you. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to hang out with me for just a few minutes to better understand what you don't know, that you don't
Consistency Creates Breakthrough Moments
Sebastian Ruskknow, not only about the world of business, but the world of podcasting and what's possible. People love to celebrate results. Nobody celebrates consistency, though. Well, they celebrate consistency after they've received the result, but nobody celebrates consistency while they're actually in the trenches. Gary isn't on the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine because of one viral video. He's there because he kept publishing, he kept speaking, he kept investing, he kept creating, he kept building every single day. For the past 16 years that I can remember, most people want year 15 results after 15 days. And I'm here to tell you right now, friends, that's just not how it works. It doesn't work like that in any shape or form. You've got to put the reps in, you've got to, you, you've got to apply the consistency, you've got to apply the ability of allowing yourself to show up every single day. Podcasting works the same way. You keep recording, you keep recording, you keep recording, and one day, well, one day, something happens. You interview that dream client and you get them as a client. Somebody sees a clip from your podcast episode, said, Hey, I've been thinking about buying your widget, heard that episode today, and I'm ready to buy it. Somebody sees you out in public. Hey, aren't you the host of the widget podcast?
The Waiting Trap And Common Excuses
Sebastian RuskThere's a thing called the waiting trap I want to talk to you about. I hear the same excuse every single week from people. Rarely a week goes by that I don't hear it. I hear, I need a better microphone, I need a nicer logo, I need to be more confident, I need to be more ready, I need to wait for money not to be funny or cows not to go moo, or for Q2 or three or four or six or eight. I need more confidence, I need more followers, I need more time, I need a better camera, I need more money. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You need one thing. You need to get started. That's it. Imperfect action often solves a majority of life's challenges or uh reasons for you to procrastinate any uh anymore. The time is right now. And as I often say and end a majority of my talks, it all starts with the decision, and it starts right now. Nobody's ever listened to a podcast episode that only existed in your head. Think about that. No one has ever listened to a podcast episode or a podcast idea that's in your head. It's in your head, it never got out. No one's ever listened to that. You understand? Podcasting isn't about downloads, friends. Has nothing to do with downloads. In fact, I would venture to say a very unpopular opinion that if five people ever listen to your podcast and it never really grew, define, you know, define grow, will you? But you leverage it to network and interview people that you want to do business with, and you make thousands and thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars
Relationships Matter More Than Downloads
Sebastian Ruskwith your podcast, does it really matter if anyone ever listens to your podcast? No. Now, there's not going to only be five people that listen to your podcast. If you're consistent, another benefit of consistency, if you show up, if you post consistently, if you post clips, if you have interesting guests, if you leverage a podcast to build your business, well, people will listen to your show, but they'll also do business with you. They'll also show up unexpectedly. You'll have those serendipitous moments that you're creating because of taking massive action, because of being willing to say, you know what, it doesn't need to be perfect. Here's what most people get wrong. They think I'll start a podcast once I know that I'll be successful. Wrong. The podcast isn't the goal. You know what the goal is? Relationships. As with anything in business, it's all about relationships. Because if you can leverage building relationships with your podcast, that's where the four that's exactly where the authority lives. That's where the trust is, that's where the sales conversations are, that's where the opportunities are. The podcast is simply the vehicle to get you to wherever it is that you want to go. But you gotta get started, and you must be consistent with your efforts and show up and be willing to suck at something brand new. Something uh, so, so when we think of, well, I just feel so overwhelmed. Not really. We have we we carry around these little computers that shoot 4K video and have decent microphones. And if not, most of us have AirPods or plug in those old school iPhone plug-in headphones, fantastic microphone on them. Makes for a perfect podcast setup. Just get started. Record the first episode, make sure you like it. Record your next Zoom meeting with a prospect. See if you can repurpose it. Sit down and do an online training
Simple Ways To Start Recording Today
Sebastian Ruskand go live like I am right now on Facebook. It doesn't cost you a dollar to do that. Share your expertise with the world. Tell them what you do. Do you actually like talking about things? I've watched clients and partnerships and speaking gigs and six-figure clients and investor relationships and long-term friendships. All of those things started to become a reality in my life because I decided to hit record 15 years ago. I didn't have any money to market my business, to really get out there and get after it. You know what I did have? I had the ability to talk. I had the ability to build relationships, I had the ability to get out there and say, hey, listen, can I just interview you and learn a little bit more about you? None of that happens until episode one is recorded. Episode one in the bag, these things start to happen. So my request to you today is to stop waiting. I looked at the cover of this magazine and I realized something. Gary didn't magically wake up on another magazine cover. He kept doing the work quietly, consistently, without permission, without certainty, without waiting. There's a lesson here. Not that Gary is wildly successful, because yes, he is. Well deserved success. The lesson here is he never stopped. And if you get started and you never stop and you're consistent with what you do, you will get some result that you're looking for. What that result is, I don't know. It depends on your output. But if you've been thinking about starting a podcast as a way to really activate yourself, really get yourself into your lane on doing something, taking action. Let's have a conversation about what's possible. For the past decade, I've had the unique privilege of working with seven and nine-figure business owners that want to start a podcast, that want to network with more people, that want to be everywhere without being everywhere. All you need to do is interview people that you want to do business with and you turn them into profitable relationships. This episode, the fact that you're watching a clip or you watch this live on Facebook or LinkedIn or on YouTube or you caught the episode, that this is your sign. It really is. There are no mistakes. Not because podcasts are trendy and popular, not because everyone needs a podcast. I don't believe everyone needs a podcast. I believe the right people need a podcast. People who are leveraging relationships to build and grow their business, people who are leveraging podcast conversations to become a better version of themselves, to improve their business, to improve their authority,
Who Misses Out If You Wait
Sebastian Ruskto increase their authority. Someone out there needs to hear your story. They need to learn from your expertise. They need to hear your perspective. And they're never going to hear it if you keep waiting. And I often say, who's missing out because you're not showing up? Something to think about, something to be with for a minute. The perfect microphone doesn't exist. The perfect launch date doesn't exist. The perfect episode definitely doesn't exist. The perfect time? That was probably six months ago. The second best time,
