TIMESTAMPS
[00:01:15] Why Start a Podcast?
[00:04:23] Podcasting Can Change Your Business.
[00:08:53] Imperfect Action Creates Momentum.
In this episode, Sebastian Rusk discusses that starting a podcast can be a transformative experience, both personally and professionally. It not only helps individuals overcome their fear of public speaking but also improves their communication skills and creates opportunities for growth and connection. The fear of public speaking is often seen as an illusion, holding individuals back from sharing their message and connecting with others. By starting a podcast, individuals can push past this fear and develop their communication skills. It may be intimidating at first, and the first episode may not be perfect, but taking imperfect action is key to creating momentum and getting started. It's not about being perfect; it's about getting the job done.
In addition to improving communication skills, starting a podcast can also have a positive impact on one's business. It provides a platform to showcase expertise, build relationships, and connect with potential clients or partners. By reaching out and inviting guests to be on the podcast, individuals differentiate themselves from others who are constantly asking for meetings or trying to sell something. It's about making it all about the guest and creating valuable content through interviews.
QUOTES
- "I say that podcasting can change your life and your business. If you let it, it'll change your business because it allows you to get in front of people that you're not ordinarily able to get in front of people on your prospect list, people in your pipeline, people that you want to do business with people that you want to build a relationship with."
- "We crave the opportunity to build those relationships through platforms like podcasting and a podcast interview. Just close your eyes and think about it for a second, what would it be like to interview people whom I could do business with and build a relationship with? What does that look like? Ask yourself that question. Like really think about it. You'll be surprised. The answers you get could very well lead you to taking action."
- "Imperfect action creates momentum. Momentum creates action."

Welcome to Podcast Suck, a podcast about starting a podcast, where we dive headfirst into the wild, wacky, and sometimes frustrating world of podcasting. If you've ever sat down with a microphone, hit record, and thought, what on earth am I doing? Or if you're just curious about the magic behind your favorite shows, then you're in the right place. Get ready for laughs, insights, and a whole lot of what not to do advice as we embark on this podcasting journey together. Let's dive in. What's happening, podcasters? Welcome back to the show or welcome to the show, wherever you are joining us. I am just glad that you're here. As I always mention on every episode, if you're just getting started with a podcast, you want to go back to the beginning of this show, episode one, because I unpack step-by-step every process that we do here at the podcast launch lab to help folks go from idea to a launched podcast in 90 days or less. But if you're one of those, choose your own adventure, you want to start wherever you press play. Well, you do your thing. I'm just, again, glad you're here today. I want to talk about why you want to start a podcast in 2024. Time I'm recording this episode, it's December 6th, 2023. Who knows when you're listening to this episode, but as we round out the end of this year and go into a brand new year, if you've been thinking about starting a podcast or someone's told you to start a podcast and you haven't taken action, well, hopefully this episode will be that nudge. that you need in order to just take some massive action and do it. Like I mentioned a lot in the talks that I get the opportunity to give and through my content constantly posed a question that I was asked some 14 years ago, and that is who's missing out because you're not showing up. That's right. Someone is missing out because you haven't decided to take action. because you've decided to stay on the sidelines and not share your valuable content, knowledge, information, story, whatever it may be. Do you understand that that has the power to change someone's life? Now that brings me to my next point that starting a podcast will radically change your life and your business. If you let it, what do you mean by that? Let me elaborate. Most people are absolutely terrified of public speaking. They're absolutely terrified of a camera, a microphone, any type of public speaking. Even if it's in front of three people, starting a podcast can help you work through that process. It can help you become a better communicator. It can help you shove the fear aside, which by the way, the fear is not real. It is an absolute illusion, but some, continue to fall victim to it and stay trapped because of it. And when we stay trapped because of fear, which actually isn't real, someone else is missing out, including ourselves by us not sharing our message. So if you want to become a better communicator, start a podcast, get those reps in your first episode is probably going to suck. just the way it is minded. Every single podcaster that started a podcast started at the same exact place. Imperfect action gets us in action and also creates momentum. Let me say that again. Imperfect action creates momentum and gets us into action. It doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to get done. Can people hear you? Can people see you? If you're interviewing somebody, you want to make sure you look good and you sound good. But for the basics of a podcast, you just want to make sure you sound good. A quiet space, recording it with your iPhone, in your closet. That's like your home personal studio. Just get started. You're missing out and somebody else is missing out too. And let's talk about the business side of things. I say that podcasting can change your life and your business. If you let it, it'll change your business because it allows you to get in front of people that you're not ordinarily able to get in front of people on your prospect list, people in your pipeline, people that you want to do business with people that you want to build a relationship with. It's far easier to ask somebody to be on your podcast than it is to ask for a meeting. Everyone's asking for a meeting. Everybody wants to sell something. Why are you different? Well, you're different because you reached out and said, Hey Jim, I'd love to have you on the podcast. Hey Betty, I'd love to have you on the podcast. You're making it all about them and you're productively picking their brain by interviewing them. And you're also building a relationship. You're building rapport. So then when you do go in for an ask or they do identify that you are in fact somebody or something that they need, they're going to ask you for the meeting. Sometimes you don't even have to ask for it. How cool is that? None of that's going to happen until you take action. So someone's missing out because you're not showing up and you're on the sidelines, including you. and your community and those people you get to meet. And then you're also living a tremendous, a tremendous amount of money on the table by not connecting with people that you want to do business with and they want to do business with you. You don't know who those people are until you actively pursue them. Now, another component to the business aspect is that when you create a podcast episode, you can then break down that podcast episode into multiple pieces of micro content, multiple. which will solve all of your social media content problems, which all of us have social media content problems. We could be more consistent. We could post more content. We could provide more value, but we're simply not doing it. Why not create a platform like a podcast that helps you solve those problems? Relationship building, better communications, better speaker, better communicator, content solution, relationship builder, lead generator, Should I go on and on and on? These are the direct benefits. And I don't care what anybody else is doing with podcasts. Well, aren't there too many podcasts out there? Aren't there too many books out there? Well, no, they're books. You think people are going to stop writing them because of someone's opinion of how many there are? Absolutely not. Same thing applies with podcast. No AI is not going to replace podcasting. No AI is not going to replace an actual human being having a human conversation. Can it be done? Sure. It could be done, but I don't think us as a human race crave that. We don't crave robots replacing us at all. We crave human connection. We crave relationships. We crave the opportunity to build those relationships through platforms like podcasting. and a podcast interview. Just close your eyes and think about for a second, what would it be like to interview people that I could do business with and build a relationship with? What does that look like? Ask yourself that question. Like really, really, really think about it. You'll be surprised. The answers you get could very well lead you to taking action. The goal of this podcast is for you to take massive action. I want you to think differently. I want to get inside your head. I want to put a bug in your ear that doesn't stop buzzing until you take action. You don't have to wait till everything's perfect. You can use your iPhone. You can buy a $49 mic on Amazon, plug it into your computer and start recording. You can sign up for Spotify for podcasters. Absolutely free to set up, launch, host, market your podcast for free, which is a great price.
